The unexpected death of Almudena Grandes has been a severe blow to her family and friends. The renowned writer died last Saturday, November 27, at the age of 61, a victim of cancer that was detected just over a year ago. The burning chapel of the author of ‘The frozen heart’ has been installed in the La Paz funeral home, in the Madrid municipality of Tres Cantos, where her loved ones have traveled. Among them, we have been able to see Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel, great friends of the deceased. The well-known pair of singers has been sad and crestfallen at the tragic loss.
Kiko Matamoros has been another of the attendees. The collaborator of ‘Save me’, the first cousin of the writer, has come accompanied by his girlfriend, the model Marta Lopez Alamo. “It is a sad day for everyone in general because there are many people who have enjoyed his writing for many years, but, above all, for the family because we all loved it very much. It is a real shame,” said the fellow member hours before in ‘Saturday Deluxe’.
The President of the Government has also made an appearance, Pedro Sanchez, who has wanted to shelter their relatives in these hard times. “We lose one of the leading writers of our time. Committed and brave, who has narrated our recent history from a progressive perspective. Your memory, your work, will always be with us,” the socialist wrote on his Twitter account when he found out about the news of the death.

A lifelong devotee of Atlético de Madrid and its neighborhood, Malasaña, Almudena Grandes leaves the poet and director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, a widower, whom she married in 1996. Together they had a daughter, Elisa García Grandes. In turn, the result of a previous relationship, the writer was already the mother of her first-born, Mauro, while Montero was Irene’s father. Almudena Grandes, along with her husband, belonged to the self-styled Peña de los 50, a gang of writers, poets and musicians of which the singers Miguel Ríos and Joaquín Sabina are also part.
Carme Chaparro, Rozalén, Ismael Serrano or Alejandro Sanz have been some of the celebrities who have wanted to honor the memory of the writer through their social networks. The official Twitter account of Atlético de Madrid has also done the same.
