Many events in Europe canceled by corona, more deaths | NOW

– Two more patients died in the Netherlands this weekend as a result of the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to three since the outbreak. The number of patients who tested positive for the coronavirus rose by 77 to 264, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported Sunday.

– The RIVM is still investigating the cause of infection of 47 patients. 74 patients are known to have contracted the virus through an already diagnosed coronavirus patient. The majority of patients reside in home insulation. The vast majority of infected people have been found in North Brabant.

– The Italian government announced on the night of Saturday to Sunday that it would lock the Lombardy region and fourteen provinces in other regions to prevent the spread of the corona virus. About 16 million people are no longer allowed to enter or leave the affected areas.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has therefore tightened up travel advice for parts of northern Italy. Part of the country now has color code red, which means that traveling to these regions is completely discouraged.

– Despite government measures, the death toll from the virus in Italy rose by 133 to 366 within a day. This 57 percent increase is by far the largest daily increase in the number of deaths since the virus outbreak in Italy about two weeks ago. The number of new infections rose by 25 percent from 5,883 cases on Saturday to 7,375 on Sunday.

– The number of corona infections in France rose to 1,126 in one day. At our southern neighbors, the number of cases of illness increased by 31 to exactly two hundred. The number of COVID-19 virus infections in the UK rose from 209 to 273. Germany now has more than a thousand infections. The German Minister for Health therefore argued Sunday for the cancellation of all public events with more than a thousand spectators or participants in his country.

– Finally, the organization of the Formula 1 race in Bahrain announced on Sunday that the Grand Prix will be closed behind closed doors on 22 March. The organization does not want to take a risk because of the COVID-19 virus.
