Social media has recently been enlivened by the recognition of men who have quit smoking. Fikri Maulana (21) used to be able to consume 2 packs a day, which resulted in a pleural effusion.
Pleural effusion is a buildup of fluid in the pleura, the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall. Under normal conditions, a little fluid in the pleura functions as a lubricant, so that the lungs can move smoothly and breathing becomes smooth. However, if there is excess fluid in the pleura, it can trigger pressure in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing.
“I used to be an active smoker who could finish 1-2 packs a day and vape, at first I didn’t feel anything, even though the lungs were already like that,” Fikri wrote, quoted from his personal X account with the permission of the person concerned, Monday ( 21/8/2023).
To detikcom, Fikri admits that his journey to quit smoking and vaping was not easy. However, he was motivated to live a healthier life after experiencing a pleural effusion which damaged his respiratory organs.
“My disease is called pleural effusion, there is fluid in the lining of the lungs, and I have TB (tuberculosis) which must be treated for 9 months without stopping,” said Fikri to the detikcom team Monday (21/8/2023).
The initial symptoms he felt were often feeling unwell and coughing that did not go away for 2 months.
Not only that, he also often felt short of breath when he slept. He ended up going to the hospital after feeling dizzy and throwing up.
After an X-ray, it turned out that there was fluid in his lungs caused by smoking. Since then he was determined not to smoke or vape anymore.
