Manchester United Coach Erik ten Hag Addresses Disappointing Season and Injuries Ahead of Duel with Aston Villa

Man United coach previewed the duel with Aston Villa

This year’s traditional Premier League Boxing Day will end with Manchester United hosting Aston Villa at 8pm. The Red Devils are in 8th place and have only won one of their last five championship games, while the Villains are in 3rd, one point off the lead and have not lost since the beginning of November.

At the press conference prior to this match, United coach Erik ten Hag addressed the team’s fans and did not hide the displeasure created by this season’s poor results.

“I’m sure they are very disappointed in us and we have to put things right. We have to do things differently and we are very grateful for all the support they give us, even with the setbacks we have had during this season.”

The Dutchman also addressed the problems that injuries have created in the center of defense – Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are still out -, despite waiting for «Raphael Varane to return» against Villa.

“We have already had five central defenders starting this season. Today [segunda-feira] we had three or four who were sick or injured”, lamented Ten Hag, then commenting on the debut of 19-year-old defender Willy Kambwala against West Ham.

“I think his performance was very solid. It looks like it has a very bright future. Of course he has to work on himself, but you can see his potential (…) he has a lot of skills to be a modern central defender”, he concluded.

Looking at the game with Aston Villa, which Ten Hag said was a “very good team and in good form”, the coach did not elaborate much on what he wants from his players: “If we are creating opportunities, we have to take advantage of them if we want to win the game, because games cannot be won otherwise. That’s clear.”

«I am not disappointed with the attitude [da equipa]. But of course we know what Man United’s standard is. We have to win as a team. (…) And each individual has to assume this responsibility », he concluded.
