Man seriously injured after attack near synagogue in Hamburg

This afternoon a man was attacked at a synagogue in Hamburg, probably with a folding shovel. The victim is according to German media a Jewish student who was wearing a yarmulke.

The 26-year-old man was believed to be about to enter the synagogue grounds when he was attacked. The victim was taken to hospital seriously injured and not in danger of life.

The suspected attacker has been arrested. It concerns a 29-year-old man in army uniform. According to the DPA news agency, he had a piece of paper with a swastika on it in his pocket. The man, a German with a Kazakh background, is said to have been very confused
