The Austrian chancellor flies to Moscow to see Putin. The first EU leader since the start of the war

The planned meeting is the first meeting between the leader of the European Union and Putin in Moscow since February 24, when Russia invaded Ukraine, writes the AFP agency.

“It is issued there after informing Berlin, Brussels and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenský,” said the chancellor’s spokesman. The aim of the trip is said to be to promote dialogue.

Austria is one of the few non-NATO members of the EU, and Chancellor Nehammer said last month that his country’s ‘neutrality’ would not change. On Saturday, however, he promised President Zelenský further support and tightening of anti-Russian sanctions. “We will continue to tighten anti-Russian sanctions until the war is over,” he said.

Of the heads of Western nations, only Israeli Prime Minister Neftali Bennett has visited Putin in Ukraine since the beginning of the war. According to the spokesman, Nehammer informed his colleagues in the EU and Zelenský, with whom he met in Kiev on Saturday, before the trip.

Kyiv is willing to act, Turkey wants to be a mediator

Kyiv, meanwhile, says it is determined to continue talks with Moscow, although in more than six weeks of war the talks have yielded no tangible results and the Russian military continues to bomb various parts of Ukraine and ground operations.

Various countries, especially Turkey, are taking on the role of mediators in these negotiations. According to the Russian agency Interfax, Nehammer’s meeting with Putin will also take place with the consent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
