Between January and September 2021, a 21-year-old man from Neu-Ulm fell victim to a previously unknown fraud several times. He transferred money to a stranger who presented himself as a victim of physical assault.
The scam started when the victim and an unknown woman came into contact via social media in January. A short time after the first contact with the woman, the victim was again contacted by a previously unknown perpetrator. He told the 21-year-old that he knew the woman and that she wanted to use the chat on social media against him. To prevent this from happening, he would address her personally about it. A little later, the unknown perpetrator contacted the victim again and informed him that he had been beaten up because of the woman’s approach and that he was now in the hospital. The perpetrator then asked several times for financial compensation for his efforts and the consequences suffered. The 21-man believed the story and over several months transferred a total of a low five-digit euro amount to the fraudsters. The Neu-Ulm criminal investigation department has started the investigation.
