It is an initiative which undoubtedly starts from a good intention which but causes discomfort on social networks. In support of the black community, Ubert Eats will offer delivery to restaurants run exclusively by blacks, white restaurateurs being excluded from this promotion. What is shocking on the networks is that the company therefore favors establishments, not for their quality in cooking or their service, but for the owner’s skin color.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced in an email that Ubert Eats will not charge delivery charges to these restaurants “for the rest of the year” in the United States and Canada. He also said that discounts will be given to small businesses owned by blacks.
On the same day, Uber Eats advertised it on its Twitter account: “You can support us and order from restaurants run by black people in the United States and Canada with a delivery charge of $ 0. “
This decision comes after numerous racial protests in support of George Floyd, an African American who died during a police arrest in Minneapolis in the United States.
To establish the list of black restaurateurs, Uber relied on its employees, local organizations as well as professional associations. The company made a point of specifying that during a registration on the platform, the restaurant owner is never asked to specify his origins. The restaurants have been informed in advance of the initiative and can withdraw from the program, as well as propose the addition of other restaurants, which are not yet included.
