Big Navi (RNDA2): Enthusiast graphics card appears in front of consoles

AMD’s next high-end graphics card for PC gamers is due to appear in the fall: “There is a lot of excitement in the gaming segment because of Navi 2X or Big Navi, like the fans [die GPU] have baptized. It will be our first RNDA2 and also a Halo product. Enthusiasts love the best and we’re working to give them exactly that “, said AMD chief financial officer Devinder Kumar recently.

RDNA2 is the further development of the RDNA technology of the Navi-1X models used in the Radeon RX 5700 XT (test), the Radeon RX 5600 XT (test) and the Radeon RX 5500 XT (test) be used. For RDNA2, AMD promises 50 percent higher performance per watt, and the architecture also integrates hardware acceleration for ray tracing. The Navi-2X chips are manufactured by 7-nm nodes at TSMCs, apparently AMD continues to rely on N7P without extremely ultraviolet exposure (EUV).

Entries in Linux patches suggest that at least one Navi-2X chip is referred to internally as Sienna Cichlid – that is the Latin name of the cichlids. Apparently the GPU integrates the VCN 3.0 (Video Core Next) and the DCN 3.0 (Display Core Next), the latter probably being designed for HDMI 2.1. The patches reveal nothing about the number of shader units, but the chip does support GDDR6 video memory on a 128-bit interface. Whether Big Navi uses HBM2 (E) instead and, for example, a 4,096 bit wide interface remains open for the time being.

Microsoft’s are at the end of 2020 Xbox Series X and Sonys Playstation 5 planned, both also use an RDNA2 graphics unit. Nvidia had the last one GA100-Chip for the A100 accelerator presented, but the Ampere GPU is designed for HPC (High Performance Computing) and Artificial Intelligence; Ray tracing cores are missing. It is not yet known when the gaming offshoots appear and how they are structured. Earlier reports speak of a production with Samsung 8LPP-Procedure (improved 10LPP), the GA100 is created with 7 nm at TSMC.
