The largest mosque in Gironde could well be in Cenon. This should be the case at the end of the major renovation work currently underway there for several years.
To overcome this, the Muslim Federation of Gironde is asking for help, via an online fundraiser. The work is in fact financed by donations from the faithful.
A large crowd
Very busy, the mosque welcomes around 800 worshipers every day. It is one of only two on the right bank, with that of Lormont – and one of 12 in the Bordeaux metropolitan area. But the prayer rooms, particularly that of Cenon, are saturated.
In view of the growing affluence, the Cenon mosque therefore wishes to double its surface area by adding 450 m2. Which would make it the largest in the Bordeaux area and, at the same time, in Gironde.
The expansion will also make it possible to double the classes of the Religious School “in order to teach everyone Islam, reading and writing the Arabic language, and memorizing the Koran”. A bookstore should also be opened.
Where is the work progressing?
The main work of the work, the facade, walls and foundations, are finished. The mosque on the participatory kitty that remains the second work: insulation, placo, painting and parquet.
Their cost is estimated at 600,000 euros, and the total cost of the work amounts to more than one million euros.
