Major Floods Hit Padang City, West Sumatra: Government Focused on Evacuation Efforts

Several locations in the City Padang, West Sumatra was hit by floods with a height of between 1 and 1.5 meters. The Padang City Government is focused on evacuating affected residents.

According to detikSumut monitoring, flooding occurred in a number of locations, including Banuaran Village, Lubuk Begalung District and Limau Manis Selatan District. Heavy rain continued to pour until evening.

“Our focus at the moment is still rescuing and evacuating residents. Accurate (data) is not yet available, it is still being collected, it will be confirmed at BPBD Padang, maybe soon we can confirm where and several points were affected,” said Deputy Mayor of Padang, Ekos Albar while visiting flood victims in Banuaran, Lubuk Begalung District, this evening, as reported detikNorth SumatraThursday (8/3/2024).

Banuaran was one of the locations worst hit by flooding. Ekos said that his party had not received any reports of casualties.

“Hopefully we can handle everything, so far there have been no casualties but we continue to monitor everything, the City Government, Police, Marines, everyone is already in the field,” he said.

“Meanwhile people have been evacuated at several points, in Banuaran, Koto Baru, they have been evacuated at the mosque, here at the school,” he said.

Until midnight Thursday, heavy rain was still occurring. The flooding itself was triggered by heavy rain that occurred since Thursday (7/3) afternoon.
