A tragic incident unfolded in Maine when a town manager sacrificed his own life to save his young son. Kevin Howell, 51, and his 4-year-old son Sawyer fell through the ice on Etna Pond during an early morning walk. Despite the dangers, Howell courageously managed to rescue his son before succumbing to the freezing waters.
A Father’s Heroic Act
On a fateful morning, Kevin Howell and his little boy Sawyer were crossing a section of Etna Pond when the ice suddenly gave way under their weight. Acting instinctively, Howell pulled his son out of the frigid waters and urged him to run back to their house, around 0.3 miles away, to alert his mother.
As Sawyer valiantly raced to his mother, she called 911 and rushed to the scene with an anchor and rope to help her husband. Tragically, she, too, broke through the ice and became trapped.
The wife’s fast thinking with the rope allowed the arrival of the Penobscot sheriff, who crawled across the ice to save her. However, by the time help arrived, Kevin Howell had already disappeared beneath the surface.
Recognizing Howell’s Sacrifice
Kevin Howell served as the town manager of Carmel. His dedication to his community and exceptional service earned him numerous accolades. He held the position for nearly a decade and was an integral part of the town’s growth and development.
As news of his tragic demise spread, town residents and colleagues mourned the loss. Many town employees changed their Facebook profile pictures to honor him, featuring the town emblem with a black ribbon symbolizing grief and mourning.
A Visionary Leader and Kind Soul
Amidst his work as the town manager, Howell also served on Maine’s second EMS Blue Ribbon Commission. He played a pivotal role in the development of a regional EMS system and was highly regarded for his support and kindness.
The Maine EMS expressed their condolences, remembering Howell as a visionary and thanking him for his service and dedication to his community and colleagues.
