Health Minister Maggie De Block (Open Vld) spoke out on Thursday against any restrictions on bicycle travel as long as cyclists keep sufficient safety distances between them.

“All of this (health security measures, note) must remain livable”, she pleaded Thursday evening during the TV news of the VRT, thus contradicting her colleague of the Interior, Pieter De Crem (CD&V) , who had not ruled out earlier today that the National Security Council on Friday is imposing a distance restriction on people going outside due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The goal is that not all people go cycling on the dike at the same time,” said the Liberal. If we respect the inter-personal safety distances, “we can then cycle as far as we want. But I understand that the police want to be able to control all of this, ”she added.
The Minister also recalled that walking and cycling were “good for health”.
“In other countries, you can sometimes not even leave your home. For our part, we want people to always have the freedom to move, go out with the children, and go for a bike ride.
