Madagascar. 8th edition of the CSR and Private Sector Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Initiatives Fair: opportunity or threat?

Novotel Alarobia Antananarivo, 06 and 07 July 2023. Biodiversity is essential to human and planetary health and therefore contributes to economic development. We derive our food, medicine, energy, water and climate stabilization from biodiversity, to name but a few examples. (Global Biodiversity Framework from Kunming to Montreal, 2022). And yet, 75% of the earth’s surface is significantly altered, 66% of the oceans are experiencing increasing cumulative impacts.

More than one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. (2019 Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Report). For Madagascar in particular, 50% of the remaining forest is less than 100m wide (Last chance for Madagascar’s biodiversity-2019). If environmental and economic issues have been seen in the past as two very different issues, the deep links between the two are not. Indeed, companies today have the responsibility to recognize their impact and their dependence on biodiversity and ecosystem services to ensure their sustainability.

This awareness thus constitutes a solid basis allowing the company to avoid the risks and seize the opportunities linked to biodiversity. Since climate and environmental issues have never been so visible and critical, they call on everyone to act. In this context, the Cabinet UR-CSR, organizer of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) exhibition in collaboration with its partners will highlight biodiversity and the private sector at the heart of the exchanges of the “8th edition of the CSR and Sustainable Development Initiatives Fair”.

This event is being held on July 06 and 07, 2023 at the Novotel Alarobia and is sponsored by:

• The Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, which has supported the event from the 1st edition to the present day;

• The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy;

• The Ministry of Tourism;

• The Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Consumption.

This edition will be an opportunity to discuss the role and place of the private sector for the preservation of biodiversity alongside other partners, with the central theme: “Private sector and biodiversity: opportunity or threat?”

Indeed, the link between the private sector and biodiversity can be seen as both an opportunity and a threat, depending on how companies manage their activities and integrate this 2 concern at the heart of their strategy. It is therefore crucial for the private sector to recognize the value of biodiversity and adopt sustainable practices to minimize negative impacts and maximize their contributions to its preservation.
