On his second day on Dutch soil, midfielder Édgar Barreto continues to be treated like an idol by the NEC Nijmegen. In addition to the love of the fans, the institution gave him a small tribute.
The Paraguayan midfielder visited the stadium of the Dutch institution, the Goffert Stadion. Again, he was greeted by fans, who made him a hallway and made themselves noticed with flares.
But the most surprising thing of all, was that the “guaraní” has his own personalized mural under the stands of the sports complex in which his team plays at home.
When he left Cerro Porteño, the NEC had been his first European club, in which he played 4 seasons in a great way between 2003 and 2007.
The debut of the NEC Nijmegen in the “Eerste Divisie” or Second Division of the Netherlands, will be on Friday, August 28 at 15:00 (Paraguayan time) as a visitor against Cambuur.
The main objective of Barreto and his squad is to get promoted to the Eredivisie.

Soccer leads many protagonists to face not only the challenges of excelling sports and financially, but to endure situations that have no relation to sport or adaptation to the place where it is their turn, such as the coronavirus pandemic that took by surprise everyone.
This is the case of Fidencio Oviedo, a compatriot midfielder who is at the service of Bolívar de La Paz in Bolivia, a country severely punished by the disease. In that country, as in most others, the development of the championships stopped and there are not even probable dates for the restart.
However, our compatriot, in a chat with Versus, commented that his team began training a few days ago under a sanitary protocol with a view to the matches of the Copa Libertadores de América, which in its Group Phase will continue on September 15.
“We are training because we must play the Copa Libertadores in September, due to the Covid 19 issue, we practice every other week and in small groups, is what protocol allows us. Only the teams that play the Cup are practicing (the other is Jorge Wilstermann), the rest are still inactive. ”
Bolívar is part of Group B, together with Guaraní from our country, Palmeiras (Bra) and Tigre (Arg). The Bolivian team has 3 points in two games played, the result of their 2-0 victory against Tigres in La Paz, their next match is at home against Palmeiras on September 16.
“March 16 was our last game for the local tournament, now we don’t know when it can come back, I suppose it would be around October, there are 16 dates left to finish the Apertura tournament. Then the Clausura tournament should be played, but I think there will be no time, the most likely that this year a single championship will be played, “said Fidencio.
THE HEIGHT
For anyone who arrives from the plain at the height of La Paz (3,650 meters above sea level), it produces a kind of drowning or dizziness. However, Fidencio told us that it did not affect him at all, he quickly adapted and is one of the benchmarks of his team.
“The height did not affect me at all from the day I arrived. It did affect my family a little, a week or so they were a little agitated, but soon they got over it and we are very well. Certainly in games you feel a little the effects of height, but I’m used to it. It helped me a lot to have arrived before the start of the preseason, then I participated in the entire preparation stage. I played all the matches in the local tournament, plus both for Copa Libertadores. The difference is that those of us who live in the highlands recover faster than those of the plains, that shows in the games, ”said the exazulgrana.
SALARY REDUCTION
Bolívar, despite being one of the big teams in Bolivia, was also forced by the long layoff as a result of the pandemic, to reconsider adjustments in the salaries of footballers. In this regard, Oviedo delimited. “If a salary adjustment was reached, we had to make a great effort understanding the current situation. We are discounted a significant percentage, that reduction is until December, but the agreement (with the directive) is to recover a good part of those discounts if we achieve the title or pass the Phase in the Libertadores, “he highlighted.
COLLAPSED HOSPITALS
The health environment is not the best in Bolivia, especially in the country’s capital, to the point that those infected by Covid 19 have exceeded the hospital infrastructure. Unfortunately, here in La Paz there are many infected, hospitals are collapsed, it is quite a complicated situation. We practically live locked up, we go out only what is necessary to go to the supermarkets or in search of medicines if necessary, ”he pointed out.
If, due to the Pandemic, he did not plan to return to our country, he said. “In principle we thought to return but we decided not to. First, because it was a risk to travel, get to quarantine and then return, it didn’t make much sense. Luckily we are in a very comfortable apartment with a terrace and with parks for children, we take great care of ourselves and the club is always keeping an eye on us, ”said the footballer.
CYCLONE FAN
Fidencio not only had one of his best moments dressing the Cerro Porteño house, but he declares himself a fan of that club. Despite the distance, the Catalan team’s campaign continues. “I am aware of everything that happens in Cerro Porteño, I see all the games, I am a fanatic cerrista. I like the team, I think Chiqui (Arce) is doing a great job giving opportunity to young people, “he said.
