Corinaldo, Daniele’s mother: «I gave the culprits photos of my son and they didn’t react»

I had never gone to the classroom. I got the satisfaction of looking them in the face. It makes me angry to know that in the end they will have a few years in prison and, since they are all very young, when they come out they will still have a life ahead. My Daniele, on the other hand, was 16 when he died, and life was taken away from him. Donatella Magagnini the mother of Daniele Pongetti, one of the lost kids in the darkest night that Corinaldo memories. He was 16 years old. His mother says that yesterday, leaving his home to go to the Palace of Justice in Ancona, he spoke to the photograph of his son on the cabinet. I said to him: here we go … this morning we go.

And what do you think of the sentence?
That a higher sentence would not hurt him. We looked each other in the eyes, waiting for the judge, and I didn’t catch anything in those looks. I came a step away from them because I had a mission to accomplish.

Which mission?
In a moment of pause I called one of their lawyers and said: does it do me a courtesy? Would you give these to the defendants? It was Daniele’s photo, one for each. He put them on the chairs and when they entered I saw that they had them in my hands, I observed their reaction.

How did they get it?
They turned to me, we crossed our eyes for a moment and, as I said, they didn’t send me anything. I thought: they are young, they will have the frightened expression of those who made it big. Instead, it didn’t seem like it was. I did not find in them the beauty that my Dani had when he combined something and came there to embrace and kiss me to be forgiven.

Ancona, who are the dead in the «Lanterna Azzurra» disco: the stories of the victims
Eleonora Girolimini, 39 years old, Senigallia

Did they keep the photos?
No. A policeman came to tell me that they could not because they were plasticized and became objects with which they could cut themselves.

How would you sum up these months without Daniele?
Like a time with no plans for the future. Before I tried to look beyond, I thought about the future. Now that word, to come, my next minute, at most my day, no later. I surf on sight, as they say. My greatest attention, all my efforts and my absolute good, are now towards my other daughter, Deborah.

Did you follow the judicial steps of the investigation?
Not in detail. Now what I wait for – and I believe the other relatives like me – the other process, that of those responsible for the Blue Lantern.

Do you have an idea of the times?
We will know after the summer when I start. That place had no papers to open. It was piled up as an agricultural warehouse. Of course, in all this story even the convicted boys put theirs with the pepper spray, but the truth that if the Lantern had been closed Daniele would not have died. And the lantern MUST be closed.

Do you often go to the cemetery?
Everyday. Dani’s soul always with me but I go there to pay homage to her body, to the boy who was no longer the same one that I had grown up that night, so much had been disfigured by death. I go there, I cuddle it a bit and I seem to console that body. I always say to him: stay calm my love. Wherever he is I wish he was the cheerful and carefree boy he was.
