It’s been a long wait, but the first names for Lowlands 2024 are finally here. Fred again.., Goldband and Queens of the Stone Age, among others, will be present in Biddinghuizen this year. Traditionally, at Festileaks we take a closer look at the announced acts: what stands out most about the first line-up drop of Lowlands 2024?
1. Goldband is headliner!
With the announcement of Fred again…, Queens of the Stone Age and Goldband, Lowlands 2024 has three male headliners. The latter is the most striking. Goldband as headliner of one of the largest festivals in the country: that feels a bit awkward, shortly after they have played at almost every festival in the Netherlands, from large to small, in the past two summers. Lowlands itself also opens the biography on the website with a resounding one ‘There’.
Anyway, rose-colored glasses: it will be a brand new show, probably with new tracks. So then we are curious again. Moreover, the group will hardly play elsewhere in 2024. Lowlands has paid a lot of money for this: because for exclusive shows by Dutch acts they pay a price tag that is quickly “as expensive as international headliners”, festival director Eric van Eerdenburg explained in a big pre-species move earlier this month at Eurosonic.
2. Dancing in the Alpha canceled again
Last year, Lowlands experimented with the double headliner slot, where a pop/rock act was followed by a dance headliner: Underworld came after Nothing But Thieves and Charlotte De Witte after – originally speaking – Florence + The Machine. Experiment apparently failed, because in the new Lowcast Eric van Eerdenburg says that Goldband, Fred again.. and Queens of the Stone Age are really the closing acts of the Alpha.
That will probably mean that we will get electrical giants such as Peggy Gou and Skrillex (who was also a Lowlands closer in 2012) in the Bravo. Surprising, because the combination with Queens of the Stone Age or Goldband seems to be possible. Instead, there is an old-fashioned, completely full house waiting in the Bravo. It may be an attempt at it migratory bird phenomenon to slow down, spread out the audience a bit more and allow the different bubbles to mix a bit more.
3. Froukje’s strip card
Froukje scores a hat trick: she has performed at Lowlands every year since the corona pandemic. In 2022 she opened the Bravo at 12:30, in 2023 at 6:00 in the Alpha. She owed that last spot to the cancellation of Florence + the Machine. She will be back in 2024, with a new album in her pocket, that is. Which slot would she take this time?
4. Look at the balance sheet
Ever since, but a little louder again after the last edition: the concern that Lowlands focuses too much on the party side and that in the future there will be less and less room for acts (and visitors) who do not fit in with that. Before 2024, that concern seems to have been reasonably countered. Peggy Gou, Goldband and Fred again… will undoubtedly make our oat milk friends run to the ticket box, but the festival also puts major acts for other subgroups in prominent places.
The Smile is perhaps the best example of this. Not exactly the cheapest act, and as a Radiohead spinoff, not the most accessible either. But they will be booked, probably even as a Bravo headliner. With Big Thief, Sampha and Spinvis there are more indie darlings high on the bill and rock lovers will get their money’s worth with Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES, Spiritbox and Inhaler (and many more beautiful things in the small fonts). Hip-hop fans are jumping for joy over the booking of Denzel Curry and Nas in particular. Finally, Soulwax, Overmono and Romy (from The xx) can count themselves among the more tasteful crossover electronics.

5. The double saving grace for the North Netherlands Orchestra
The NNO was supposed to perform at Lowlands in 2022, but that was canceled at the last minute because the construction of Stromae was overdue. Very sad and the organization was in ruins. Last year they were allowed to overtake and they did so excellently: the circle pit during Beethoven’s Fifth is still etched in the memory. The orchestra will be allowed to perform again in 2024 act of presence give at Lowlands. According to the Lowlands website, the musicians will play film music, including those from Pulp Fiction, The Godfather and James Bond. Do you want to be there?
6. Leapfrog with Down The Rabbit Hole
Sometimes Lowlands and Down The Rabbit Hole look like a football club. Lowlands is the first team and DTRH the second. Are you doing well in the second team? Then you can move on to the first team the following summer.
That is the case again this year. Including current artists such as Froukje, Sticks, Overmono, Fred Again…, Sleaford Mods and so on. And this is just the first drop, maybe more names will be added. We’ll keep an eye on it.
7. Podverdikkeme the Sugababes
A great highlight of a booking: Sugababes. The girl group recently performed in Paradiso and also played at Milkshake last festival season. The bookers of Lowlands 2024 apparently liked this. An ultimate zeroes act with bangers like ‘Push The Button’ and ‘Round Round’, that will be a lot of slut dropping in Biddinghuizen. Full Alpha in the afternoon guaranteed.
