Lowest death toll in two months, “but the virus is dead …

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has received “only” 10 new reports of deaths from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours. That is the lowest number in the past two months. “But the virus is certainly not gone yet and can also flare up.”

The number of reports of people who died of the coronavirus is remarkably low on Sunday with ten. Fifteen new hospital admissions have also been reported. The fact that the number of reports of deceased persons on Sunday is so low does not mean that the virus is gone, warns Marion Koopmans, professor by special appointment of virology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

“The numbers are always lower on weekends. We really have to wait on Monday to get a clearer picture. The falling figures do fit the trend, but we can certainly not say on the basis of the latest figures that this is a trend break. Therefore, people should not think that it is over. The peak has passed, but there are still many people on the IC. The virus is certainly not gone and can also flare up. ”

The official death toll from the pandemic in the Netherlands is now at 5,680. It has been established that these people were infected with the virus. The number of infected persons also increased again. In total, 125 new reports of people who tested positive came in. This brings the total number of infections to 43,995.

The actual number of deceased and infected people is higher, because people who have symptoms are not always tested. The number of reports is also not equal to the number of deaths in the last 24 hours: sometimes GGDs and deaths only report a few days later.

Exciting period

According to Koopmans, it is also awaiting the consequences if the measures are further relaxed. ,, More things will open again and it will get busier on the street. It has gone well so far. But are we all going to keep our attention? That will be an exciting period. ”

Koopmans has not yet heard whether opening the schools has had an effect. “In Denmark this had hardly any effect. It’s been a week here now, so it’s too early to say anything. Teachers now also have more options to be tested, so it remains to be seen what we will see in the registrations. ”

According to Koopmans, we are at the beginning of a new phase. “We should also think there in terms of months, rather than weeks. We have to think together about how we go on as a society so that the virus is kept under control, but that society does get going again. ”

Excess mortality

In recent weeks, figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics have shown that there is “excess mortality”. Significantly more people died than in the same period last year. Mortality is high among elderly people in care homes. RIVM recognizes the figures and has indicated that they may be included in the report at a later stage.

Other countries, such as Belgium and Great Britain, do attribute the excess mortality to the corona outbreak. Both the excess mortality and the daily number of deaths reported by RIVM have steadily declined in recent weeks. Because GGDs do not report all deaths immediately, and sometimes only a few days later, such as during a weekend, fluctuations can occur from day to day.

Every day we get a lot of questions about the updates we bring regarding the corona virus. We have collected the most frequently asked questions below:

Why don’t you publish figures on the number of patients healed?

That is not known at the moment. There is no obligation to report that people have been cured from the disease. A person who has no complaints for 24 hours is considered cured. These figures are therefore not maintained by RIVM.

Why is there a deviation between the figures of the RIVM and the GGD?

RIVM collects data from the regional GGDs and publishes this in a daily update. We have regular contact with the GGD Noord-Limburg and Zuid-Limburg to request an up-to-date score. These figures are often slightly ahead of the figures published daily by RIVM. This may cause an interim difference between the figures of RIVM, the GGD and possibly other (Limburg) media.

How should I interpret these numbers?

The number of reported patients and deceased patients may differ per day for various reasons. For example, we see that deceased patients are not always reported on the same day. The actual number of infections with the new coronavirus is higher than the number mentioned here. This is because not everyone is tested with a possible infection, but especially patients who are so ill that they are hospitalized and people who work in healthcare.
