Love declaration for sign interpreter Irma Sluis: ‘She is our bright spot’

In the song, the band members declare love to the woman who converts Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s words into sign language during the coronapers conferences.

The song, sung in Drenthe’s dialect, can be heard for the first time tonight in the NPO Radio 5 program Volgspot. Earlier tonight, the clip was put online, in which it seems as if Irma Sluis interprets the text herself with her hands:

The tire thus leaves its comfort zone. “Normally we like heavier guitar work,” says singer and bassist William Bossong. “But this song is a bit calmer.”

Serene rest

Why should there be such a song? “For us, and I think the whole of the Netherlands, Irma has become a bright spot in all serious and melancholy reports about the virus,” Bossong explains.

“She exudes serenity with her natural appearance and beautiful hand movements,” he continues. “And the most important thing: we genuinely seem like a very nice woman.”

The Mooi Wark band is also called the Drenthe equivalent of Normal. The formation has been performing for more than thirty years, especially in the Northern Netherlands. The biggest hit to date was the song In the Bare Ass.
