L’Oreal will no longer call its creams “whitening”. «Celebrate all skin types»

L’Oréal cancels “white” and “whitening” from its products: the group has decided to withdraw the words from the description of its cosmetic products on the packaging, in the wake of the anti-racism demonstrations that have taken place all over the world. The decision to remove the words white / whitening (white / whitening) fair / fairness – (light / lightening) from all the products used to make the skin more uniform was not followed by other explanations: the group did not however add other details nor communicated further decisions, such as the withdrawal of the creams on the market.

The beauty of all skin types

The choice came after that of the branch of the Unilever group that chose to rename its “Fair & Lovely” skin whitening cream with the name “Fair” only, as it declares itself committed to celebrating all types of skin. Thus sets an aesthetic ideal that has as its reference that of the diaphanous skin of the geishas, but also of an alleged aesthetic aspiration to aim for.

The Floyd case

After the Floyd case – the 46-year-old African American who died suffocated during his arrest in Minneapolis – the wave of anti-racist protests, even violent, continues to make his echo heard. The idea of a politically correct skin already animated the social world a few weeks ago, when Kasia Smutniak launched the filter that simulated vitiligo on Instagram, thus celebrating the diversity, even of the skin.
