Looking for work in corona time? Here you will find that job

The sectors that have been hit hard by this corona crisis are obvious: there are hardly any jobs left in the hospitality industry, sales, security and logistics. These are sectors that had to deal with an enormous need for personnel before corona.

But desk clerks and secretarial staff at banks, for example, are also less and less in demand, says Mechelien van der Aalst, labor market advisor at UWV.

“We see a clear turnaround in the labor market, in which the number of promising professions is decreasing and a large number of professions offer clearly less good opportunities than before the corona crisis. In the meantime the demand for personnel is increasing again and with it the chances of work, but in many professions not yet up to pre-corona level. ”

Job opportunities

Where, according to the UWV, the chances of a job are still good, are healthcare, education, in the government and, with some uncertainties, also in construction and industry. But starting next week usually doesn’t work.

“Because what applies to almost all these vacancies is that retraining or further training is necessary”, says Van Aalst. And that takes a lot of time.

“For professions at secondary level, you have to take at least a year to a year and a half for it. Although it depends on the type of job.”

Learn and earn

For example, a catering employee who wants to retrain has several options, says Van Aalst.

“For example, as a side entry student you can often become a Vocational Counseling Student. Such a BBL student then works 4 days and goes to school for 1 day. That is interesting for adults. Such a training to become a care worker, for example, can go faster than someone else. who has just left school because basic subjects such as Dutch are often no longer necessary. “

To find such a job, if you have unemployment benefits, you can go to the UWV, where an adviser can help you with your search. But there are also learn / work desks, often at the UWV in all regions where everyone can go. And you can also go to a career development advisor. Since 1 August, the costs have been reimbursed by the government.

Jobs at the municipality

There are also many vacancies at a higher level, but often in very specific jobs. Van Aalst: “For example, the municipalities in the Netherlands have a great need for experts in spatial planning, planners and environmental experts. Because municipalities often want to build houses. But to qualify for this, you need the right training, which can easily be 3 to 4. years. “

There is a great need for accountants and health care psychologists (GZ psychologists). But that requires academic training.

Still, that is worth considering for those who can handle it, says Van Aalst. “For all those jobs where we now see many vacancies, I think they also offer long-term prospects.”
