Bangkok (VNA) – The Thai cabinet approved in principle the proposal that all foreigners residing in the country with a non-immigrant visa (NIV) must have insurance from COVID-19 of at least 100,000 dollars.

Deputy government spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul said the rule will apply to all holders of one-year nonimmigrant visas, who are from marriage, employment, business and retiree groups.

The new regulation was issued after an amendment to the regulations approved by the cabinet in April 2020. Currently, NIV visa holders in Thailand must be insured for approximately $ 1,300 for outpatient treatment or $ 13,000 for hospital treatment.

The official added that later the Immigration Department will fully disclose the details and formalize the regulation.

Thailand today registered 2,331 new cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths, thus raising the total number of infections in this Southeast Asian country to 204,595, with 1,525 fatalities.
