Lokalkompass country trip: New York: Skyscrapers, many kilometers and emotional moments

Your next Lokalkompass country trip will take you to the city that literally never sleeps. Tragically, New York City is currently the epicenter of the corona crisis in the USA – the city looks almost deserted. An unreal state. Like everyone else, I would never have thought that even here public life could almost stand still. Perhaps now is a good time to take you on a journey through pictures to my favorite city.

Almost exactly five years ago: It all started on March 14, 2015 – seven days later. The motto of this city trip: “As far as your feet can carry”. I didn’t want to stress myself out on this vacation, but I wanted to see as much as possible in the short time. A balancing act. You travel a lot (a lot!) Because there is plenty to discover in New York. Alone when I was transferring from the airport to the hotel I almost got a stiff neck and was amazed like a small child – what a city!

At this point I have to admit that there is hardly any way to describe how this city looks the first time. We covered several kilometers in total, by subway and on foot, experienced sunshine with 15 degrees, but also snow. At the end of the trip, the famous adventure account was filled to the brim with the Empire State Building (three hours in line!), Rockefeller Center, Brooklyn Bridge, boat tour, Statue of Liberty, shopping in the Jersey Gardens Outlet, parade on St. Patrick’s Day, Times Square, a game of Knicks in Madison Square Garden, BBQ at relatives in Garden City, Central Park, pastrami sandwich at Katz’s, Shake Shack burger and, and, and! Before I expand this list further, I would rather let the pictures speak for themselves.

Impressive current recordings in New York by “dronefanatic”:

Special mention should be made of the area around Ground Zero in southern Manhattan, the impressive One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Here, too, it is difficult for words to describe what you see there and what you experience emotionally. Unreal, right at the point where it all happened. There were four of us in New York, when we were in the museum we hardly spoke to each other – an extremely emotional place, everyone had to deal with it all first of all.

New York is without a doubt worth a trip – many fall in love with this city – but without the need to really live here. New York was a wonderful state of emergency for me – which I will certainly experience again at some point.
