LOK: Sports federations are not against partial takeover of LOV functions – Other sports – Apollo.lv – Sports

Following the evaluation of the international audit company Ernst & Young regarding the LOV functions, the audit experts and the LOK have initiated structural changes, which envisage the principle of the “One-Stop-Shop” model. This means that, starting from January 1, 2021, the financial resources distribution function will be performed not by the LOV, but by the LOK. LOV athletes and coaches will continue to receive funding for training and competition work only from their sports federation.

“The introduction of this model will increase the responsibility of sports federations. Federations already deal with these functions only with other athletes who are not part of the LOV. In this case, the funding will go to the federation, which will continue to communicate with their athlete. only with LOV, bypassing the federation, “explained the advantages of the new model.

The model also has informal support from sports federations.

“At the moment, no one has called with criticism or ignorance. The federations understand that their role will increase, as we promised before the election. This is one of the ways to put it into practice. In turn, LOV will be able to focus more on athletes than on accounting functions duplicates the federation, “stressed Lejnieks.

Of course, the athletes themselves have no objections to the introduction of the new model.

“The athlete is even a winner in this case, because the medical center will focus its resources only on the growth and well-being of the athlete,” Lejnieks noted.

The new model envisages a greater role for the LOC in the redistribution of funds, but, as Lejnieks said, it will not increase the administrative costs for the Olympic Committee.

The future functions of the LOV will be to continue the work related to the service of high-level athletes, such as medicine, physical fitness and the services of a psychologist.

The Latvian Sports Law stipulates that SIA “Latvijas Olimpiskā vienība” ensures the preparation of the country’s best athletes in individual Olympic sports for participation in the Olympic Games, youth olympiads and other international sports competitions. Changes to the Sports Law will be needed to extend the LOV’s functions to non-Olympic sports and youth teams.

For the time being, the criteria for receiving public funding are expected to remain unchanged, only the mechanism for receiving support will change.

It is expected that after the transfer of some functions to the LOK, the structure of the LOV will also change, with a decrease in administrative staff and an increase in service staff.

SIA “Latvijas Olimpiskā vienība” was established in 1994 with the aim of supporting the preparation of the best Latvian athletes for the Olympic Games.

The holders of LOV capital shares are MES (29%), LOK (60%) and LSPA (11%).
