SCHIEDAM – In the future people will live in the buildings on the corner of Nieuwe Haven and Schoolstraat. Several warehouses there are being renovated into homes by two developers.
The buildings were recently purchased by developers Ludwig Vastgoed and Westminster from Bloemendaal and Amsterdam respectively. These parties still have to work out their plans and obtain all necessary permits.
The photo above shows how a forklift and truck are used to clear the New York building at Nieuwe Haven number 109. This building was used as business space. The photo was taken on Saturday, January 23, 2021. To the left of it you can just see a smaller building at number 107. The building at 107 and the buildings to the left, which previously housed the Amatalux furniture store for several years, are reportedly being added to the housing development project involved.
The building at 109, New York, is the most striking building. The terrain behind it continues to the Warande. The building is a national monument (no. 525437). It was built in 1858. It housed a distillery. At the turn of the century from the 19th to the 20th century, it was given the function of warehouse for the Indian Trade Company. You can read more about the building on this webpage.
