The authorities in Marseille and Bordeaux are taking stricter measures against the spread of the corona virus. Despite a duty to mask and strict distance rules, the two major French cities, like Paris, are classified as ‘corona hotspot’.

Gathering of more than ten people is prohibited in the cities and surroundings, including on the beaches near Marseille. Standing at the bar is not allowed and alcohol is not allowed outside late at night.

The number of visitors allowed at events and sports competitions has been reduced from 5000 to 1000. Weddings and other family gatherings are being restricted, as are visits to nursing homes. In any case, the measures will apply until October 1 and will be strictly enforced with additional police efforts, said regional director Fabienne Boccio.

“All warning signs are on red,” said director Yann Bubien of the university hospital in Bordeaux, where 77 corona patients are, 24 of whom are in intensive care. “A very rapid increase in the last ten days.” In Marseille, the IC departments are threatening to be overloaded, said the director of the public hospitals in France’s second city.

In France, 6,158 new corona infections were reported in the past 24 hours. Although that is less than the days before, the figures are always lower on Mondays because less testing is done on Sundays. In total, more than 387,000 infections have been diagnosed. The number of deaths increased by 34 to 30,950.
