The president of Mexico believes there appears to be an “alux” in the picture – a creature from Mayan folklore. However, it seems that the picture has a different origin than what the president first thought.
On Saturday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (69) posted two photos on his Twitter account.
He claims that one photo was taken by an engineer on Wednesday last week, in connection with work on a railway project in Mexico.
The picture shows what many would probably describe as branches and leaves with two stars in the background, but which to others looks like a creature.
– It appears to be an “alux”, writes López Obrador.
– Everything is mysterious, concludes the president in the Twitter message.
The Mexican writer Mauricio Schwarz responds to the president’s Twitter message by pointing to, among other things an article from 2021 with the same image.
– Yes, Andrés, an engineer took a picture three days ago that has gone around Nuveo LeonNuveo LeonStat i Mexico. since February 2021, writes Schwarz.
Several others in the comment field also refer to previous use of the image in other contexts.
The second picture the president has posted is said to be of a sculpture from the archaeological site of Ek Balam in Mexico.
NBC News and The Guardian writes that according to Mayan traditional beliefs, “aluxes” are small, mischievous creatures that live in forests and meadows.
They should tend to deceive people, for example by hiding objects. This causes some to post offerings to keep the creatures calm, the two newspapers write.
According to NBC News, President López Obrador has long recognized indigenous culture and beliefs.
