Live ticker attack Halle (Saale): Terror trial in Magdeburg against neo-Nazi Stephan B. on the day of the attack in Halle

Halle (Saale) –

It was one of the worst anti-Semitic attacks in German post-war history: The right-wing terrorist attack in Halle on October 9, 2019 made headlines around the world.

Here you can find the live coverage of the 22nd day of the trial against Stephan B. on December 1st in Magdeburg. Alexander Schierholz reports on the trial today.

December 1st, 2020: Day 22 in the terrorist trial against Stephan B. around the attack in Halle

10:57 am: Ismet Tekin, operator of the Kiez kebab, thanks the judge

Now Ismet Tekin, the operator of the Kiez kebab, speaks: “Today I would like to thank the chairwoman who gave us this room,” he says with a look at the chairwoman judge Ursula Mertens. “That was very important to me.” His lawyer had previously recognized that the court had given the victims the space with the trial to “share their pain”. Tekin joins his attorney’s criticism of the federal prosecutor’s office.

10.48 a.m.: Lawyer for the Kiez kebab operator: feeling of being perceived as a threat

Ismet Tekin’s lawyer, the operator of the Kiez kebab, criticized the federal prosecutor’s office in his closing lecture: They did everything they could to keep their clients out of the proceedings from the start. The attack on the Kiez kebab was an attempted murder on Tekin. After all, the prosecution also rightly classified the shooting at police officers near the snack bar as an attempted murder, according to the accessory prosecutor. While the federal prosecutor’s office had affirmed a specific risk to the police officers, they questioned this with regard to Tekin.

The lawyer had previously focused on how the attack had changed the lives of Ismet Tekin and his brother Rifat: “The feeling of being threatened but also perceived as a threat has changed your view of Germany.” Halle is hers Homeland. The lawyer then draws a bow from the assassin, who appeared as a lone perpetrator, to German society, in which hatred against Jews and Muslims is widespread. “The accused is in good company.”

10.03 a.m.: Kevin’s father’s lawyer speaks – and turns directly to Stephan B.

Kevin Schwarze’s father’s lawyer speaks. Like the previous speaker, he speaks to the defendant’s conscience: He not only killed black people and previously killed Jana Lange in front of the synagogue. “You also destroyed the lives of your mother and sister, and your own life too.” When asked to the court, the lawyer said: “Please make sure that he is never released again.”

9:57 a.m.: Lawyer for accessory prosecution: Kevin Schwarze’s mother made it to court for the first time

The start is made by the lawyer for Kevin Schwarze’s mother, who was shot by the assassin in the Kiez-Döner. “My client made it here for the first time in four months,” he says. She is doing very badly. “They took a child from a mother in the most disgusting, perverse way,” he says in the direction of the accused, who is following the lecture without any external emotion.

The lawyer asks the court to “exhaust all legal options”. The federal prosecutor’s office had demanded a life sentence for the assassin, the determination of the particular gravity of the guilt and subsequent preventive detention.

First of all: This is what the 22nd day of the hearing is all about

The trial before the Naumburg Higher Regional Court in Magdeburg against the Halle assassin will continue this Tuesday. It is planned that the lawyers of the more than 40 co-plaintiffs will begin their pleadings. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office had already demanded the maximum sentence for the assassin Stephan B. on November 18 – life imprisonment and subsequent preventive detention. The co-plaintiffs are scheduled to have three days until December 8th.
