Schiphol closes 5 of 7 piers due to corona crisis

Schiphol is phasing out activities now that the number of passengers has decreased by more than 60 percent and there are far fewer flights as a result of the corona crisis. The airport is closing five of the seven piers and is aiming for this to start next Tuesday.

This means that Schiphol will remain open in a very slimmed-down form for passenger flights that still arrive and depart. This includes repatriation, freight traffic, emergency services and alternative aircraft.

The intention is that from Tuesday only the D and E pier will still be in use for passenger flights. The aircraft stands at the other piers are used as temporary parking places for the aircraft that will be grounded for a longer period of time.

Airbnb: cancel reservations free of charge

Anyone who would go on holiday in the coming weeks and rented accommodation via Airbnb can cancel that place of stay free of charge. All costs incurred, including service costs, will be refunded, let the rental platform know. It concerns all reservations made on or before March 14th up to and including the check-in date of April 14th.

Airbnb is also introducing a ‘flexible booking’ option. Landlords who are flexible with the option to cancel will be rewarded for this, the platform promises. For example, they become easier to find.

In Italy, Airbnb has launched a project for doctors and nurses fighting the coronavirus. They can get accommodation for free. Airbnb will cover all costs for two months.

Lombardy fears collapse of health system

The governor of the Italian region of Lombardy, severely affected by the corona virus, fears that the health system in the area will collapse. According to the governor, the moment is approaching when the sick can no longer receive treatment.

“Unfortunately, the numbers of infections don’t go down, they remain high,” he says. “Soon we will no longer be able to treat the sick.”

In Lombardy, almost half of the more than 30,000 infections in Italy have been diagnosed. Milan and the severely hit Bergamo are in the region. In the last 24 hours, 319 people died, bringing the total number of deaths in the region to 1959.

New York wants army help

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wants the U.S. military to help the city fight the corona virus. In his view, the military has “extraordinary medical capabilities” that its city can now make good use of.

The largest city in the US has to deal with a rapidly increasing number of infections. The number is now just under a thousand people. New York is therefore one of the hardest hit regions in the US.

No King’s Day at embassies

It is just as tradition as King’s Day itself: the celebration of this day at all embassies worldwide. But the corona virus also throws a spanner in the works here. Minister Blok (Foreign Affairs) has canceled the celebration of King’s Day at all about 150 Dutch embassies and other diplomatic posts abroad.

“Given the worldwide corona crisis, it makes sense that this year the usual festivities will be dispensed with,” says Blok.

The annual celebration of King’s Day is also a festive highlight for many Dutch people abroad. From Abuja to Zagreb, the Dutch celebrate the king’s birthday with bitterballen and orange bitter. It was one of the network meetings of the year for companies. Depending on the country, tens to several hundred people flock to it.

King’s Day was previously canceled in Maastricht.

Doctors are brought up to date

Doctors are massively looking for important information for them about the new coronavirus. Ryanair stops

Ryanair will keep nearly all of its planes on the ground next week due to the corona crisis, the company said. Then the airline will only operate a very small number of flights to maintain essential connections, mainly between the UK and Ireland.

Remembrance Day and Liberation Day

The National Committee 4 and 5 May is looking for a different form for the National commemoration on May 4 on Dam Square and the national celebration of Liberation Day on May 5. The shape should be consistent with the many measures in place due to the coronavirus outbreak. Whether that means that there is no mass meeting on May 4 in the Dam in Amsterdam, a spokesman for the committee does not confirm.

“Government guidelines are leading,” he says. These include that people should not come together in large groups and that a mutual distance of 1.5 meters should be kept.

British schools

Schools in Scotland and Wales will close as of Friday due to the outbreak of the new corona virus. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that schools in England are also closing.

Trams and buses

Even fewer buses and trams run in The Hague and Utrecht. The public transport companies HTM and U-OV further adjust the timetable. In Utrecht, for example, the Uithoflijn is no longer running. Buses and trams run on other connections as if it were Sunday.

The change in Utrecht takes effect on Friday. In The Hague, the adjustment applies from Monday. The carriers had previously changed the timetable because of government measures.

In recent days, fewer and fewer people use public transport. At the same time, more and more employees are reporting sick, the Utrecht transport operator U-OV reports.

Belgians flock outside

The Belgian restrictive measures due to the corona virus lure people from Brussels into the parks due to the nice weather. The mayor of Brussels has therefore decided to close off the green lung of the city, the Ter Kamerenbos, for motorists.

According to the new government guidelines, Belgians must “stay indoors until 5 April, unless a transfer is essential”, such as going to the supermarket, where strict rules apply. Cycling or walking in the open air is allowed. Preferably alone, but taking a breath with family members or a friend is allowed. In addition, people are expected to keep a distance from each other.

Many people also go outside in Antwerp. There, the government threatens to close the city’s largest park, the Rivierenhof, if visitors “do not take their responsibility.” There is still sport and picnic in groups. Since today, a ban on gathering has been in force in Belgium.

Infection radar RIVM offline

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) quickly took the infection radar that went online Tuesday back offline, because the website was outdated.

It was a website that had already been used in 2009 with the Mexican flu. “We have now relaunched that site too quickly. The website quickly became overloaded and appeared to no longer meet all requirements, “said the spokesman.

The infection radar was intended to get as complete a picture as possible of the development of the coronavirus. There is not enough capacity to test people with minor complaints. 100,000 Dutch people were able to pass on health information every week.

RIVM does not yet have an alternative to the infection radar.

Police chief of police: postpone non-urgent tasks

The police are examining whether it is possible to postpone or reshape a number of non-urgent police tasks. That said police chief Erik Akerboom via a video. It remains to be seen what the other approach will look like.

“The coronavirus continues to spread and that also has consequences for the work of the police,” said Akerboom. “As a police, we continue to do what is necessary to ensure safety in society. We help citizens as much as possible and keep in touch. There are many ways to have contact. ”

He is referring to, for example, calling, e-mail or whatsapp. However, he added: “Right now, contact with citizens is important. It remains important to take to the streets. ”

A special telephone line that was opened last week for elderly people who suffer from increasing loneliness as a result of corona measures is ringing off the hook. At peak times, fifteen employees and volunteers are on the phone at the same time (0348 – 466666), according to the General Dutch Association for the Elderly (ANBO).

China has also already agreed to ship medical equipment to severely affected countries, such as Italy and South Korea. Some European countries have just announced measures to curb exports of medical protective equipment. In this way they hope to prevent shortages in their own country.

In addition to the aid, Chinese scientists have begun to try out an “effective” vaccine against the new coronavirus in humans. The Beijing Ministry of Defense has announced that the vaccine was developed under the direction of epidemiologist Chen Wei.

“Virus can survive for hours”

The new coronavirus can survive for hours on surfaces or in the air. That’s according to a U.S. government-funded study published Tuesday in the leading medical journal New England Journal of Medicine.

Scientists discovered that the virus can still be detected on plastic and stainless steel after two to three days and on cardboard for up to 24 hours. The team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and from the universities of California, Los Angeles and Princeton used a nebulizer to simulate a coughing or sneezing person and found that the virus was left in the air for three more hours. find.

There is criticism from some scientists about the research. They say the threat from the air may be exaggerated.
