The death of African-American George Floyd in a violent arrest continues to cause great tension in the United States. Hundreds of people demonstrated Friday evening outside the White House to express their anger. Waving signs with slogans like “Stop killing us” and “Black lives matter”, protesters demanded “justice for George Floyd” outside Donald Trump’s residence. The protests have spread to many American cities, from Detroit to Atlanta to New York, Houston and the capital Washington.
A curfew was declared in Minneapolis where a police station had been set on fire overnight from Thursday to Friday. The events led to the deployment of 500 National Guard soldiers to the scene. The military “will provide support to civil authorities, as long as requested, to ensure the safety of people and property”.
