The coronavirus is not only found in saliva and mucus, it is also found in sperm. That is the result of a study conducted by Chinese researchers, published in JAMA Network Open. A team from Shangqui Municipal Hospital examined 38 men during the peak of the pandemic in January and February.

The virus was found in their sperm in 16 percent. A quarter of them were in the acute phase of the disease, 9 percent were recovering. “We found that SARS-CoV-2 can be put into the sperm of patients with the coronavirus, as well as into the seeds of patients who are recovering,” said researcher Diangeng Li. Also, according to him, the virus can persist in the testicles.

It is not the first time that a virus has been found in sperm. This was also the case with Ebola and Zika. The researchers cannot yet say with certainty whether the coronavirus is sexually transmitted, they are investigating that even further. “If it could be proven that SARS-CoV-2 can be sexually transmitted, sex could be a crucial part of prevention. Abstinence or condom use can be considered as a preventative for these patients. ”
