LIVE | Brussels wants to further insulate ‘dark red’ fireplaces | Inland

On Monday, the European Commission will present a proposal to set up ‘dark red zones’ in the EU, which can also cross borders with neighboring countries, where unnecessary movements are restricted. These are areas where the coronavirus is taking hold very hard, says chairman Ursula von der Leyen. Persons wishing to travel elsewhere from these areas should be tested for a Covid-19 infection prior to departure and quarantined upon arrival in a different colored zone.

Von der Leyen insisted that internal borders must remain open in order not to disturb the internal market. But with the rapid spread of new variants, it is necessary to map out where additional measures are needed, she said.

According to EU President Charles Michel, EU leaders agree that vaccinations should be speeded up. In doing so, they count on pharmaceutical companies to fulfill their agreements about deliveries. According to the European Commission, manufacturer Pfizer has assured that deliveries of the vaccines will be up to standard from next week and will increase thereafter. According to von der Leyen, there is widespread support for her call to have 70 percent of all adults vaccinated by summer.

Leaders also pledged to have more research done on the genetic material of the virus found in a positive test. In this way, new variants can be detected more quickly.
