The actual number may be higher, as some people recover from Listeria without seeking medical help and it may take one to four weeks for symptoms to appear.

While the CDC investigates, Agency recommend That people “reheat pre-cooked chicken to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit” and avoid eating “any cold dish made with pre-cooked chicken, such as savory chicken salad and salads with chicken sold on salad bars, the deli counter, or the radiator section of the store.
All of the illnesses associated with this outbreak have been in long-term care facilities or hospitals.
The CDC notes that “pregnant women, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness.”

Listeria is caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. While it usually causes only mild illness in pregnant women, it can damage the fetus or newborn, possibly causing miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth.
About 1,600 Americans become infected each year, resulting in death in about 20% of cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
