Listeria outbreaks associated with pre-cooked chickens caused 1 death and 3 hospitalizations

All of the illnesses associated with this outbreak have been in long-term care facilities or hospitals.

The CDC notes that “pregnant women, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness.”

Listeria is caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. While it usually causes only mild illness in pregnant women, it can damage the fetus or newborn, possibly causing miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth.

About 1,600 Americans become infected each year, resulting in death in about 20% of cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
