City news Liverpool removed from the List of World Heritage Sites UNESCO came from the ongoing committee session in Fuzhou, China, on Wednesday (22/7).
The British government, including citizens of the city called Liverpudlian, of course disappointed with the loss of this prestigious status.
Liverpool earned World Heritage Site status by virtue of its historic waterfront and the city was an important center during the height of the British Empire’s reign in the world.
New developments, such as a new Premier League football field for Everton FC in the Bramley-Moore Dock area – one of the areas included in the historic Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City complex – have been considered “serious damage” to the historic site.
In the UNESCO session in China, 20 votes were cast, with 13 votes in favor of removing Liverpool from the World Heritage Site list, five against and two invalid ballots.
The historic city of Liverpool – from its port, home to the Beatles, football club Liverpool FC and Everton FC – is not the only destination that has been removed from UNESCO’s prestigious list.
UNESC0 has been releasing this list since 1978. Massive development and environmental degradation are the two main factors that can eliminate this status.
Before being deleted, usually a place will be on the Danger List first, so that the local government can take steps to save it, as is happening with the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Sumatran Rainforest in Indonesia.
If the Great Barrier Reef is threatened because of the destruction of its coral reefs, then the Sumatran Rainforest is on the “hell list” because it experiences forest fires too regularly and there are many cases of exploitation of native species there.
