Life in Kiev is slowly starting again, but it’s not safe yet

They cast amorous glances at each other from their electric scooters. A young couple, dressed in thick winter coats with hats on. On the corner of the street an elderly woman tries to sell daffodils.

When the traffic lights turn green, the cars speed past. It is again quite busy on the Kresjatik, the major artery in the center of Kiev, but it is incomparable to the situation before the war. The traffic jams in the Ukrainian capital were notorious.

Women, children and the elderly are still leaving Ukraine. But while the war in the east of the country is still in full swing, more than a million Ukrainians have already returned. They think it is safe enough in other parts of the country, even though rockets came down this week in the far west, near the Polish border in Lviv.

Also in the imposing hall of Kiev Central Station it is visible that more and more people are returning. Previously, residents queued for days to leave the country, but there is now no question of a mass exodus. On the contrary, there are many returnees, clearly recognizable by their luggage and pets.
