LG is reportedly planning a rather unusual smartphone for the second half of the year. The device, which was developed according to the Korean IT news portal “ETnews” under the code name “Wing”, will therefore come with a square second screen and is therefore T-shaped. This should make it more convenient, for example, to browse additional information or comments while watching a YouTube video on the skin screen. A healthy dose of skepticism, however, still seems necessary for the rumor.

More content immersion

A 5G smartphone with a 6.8-inch main screen, a CPU from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 line and a 64-megapixel main camera, as far as the alleged key data of the LG Wing seem plausible. It is unusual that the device supposedly has a square second screen of four inches diagonal. For the time being, it doesn’t seem very clear whether it will be unfolded or possibly a clip-on accessory. In any case, it should give the wing a T-shape overall, in which the square display appears below or to the side of the main screen, depending on the use.

According to “ETnews”, the idea behind this unusual form is to enable more immersive handling of content on the main screen. A quite obviously photoshoped picture shows, for example, an on-screen keyboard outsourced to the second display. The control elements for image processing in a photo app could also fit on the secondary screen in this way. The option of displaying additional information about videos there, such as YouTube comments or IMDB data, is also addressed. Of course, it seems questionable whether independent app developers will also support this.

Start this year

At first glance, one might suspect that the LG Wing may be a concept device in an early stage of development. However, according to the report, work is already underway towards a market launch in the second half of this year. If that’s actually true, you should know more in six months at the latest. Until then, LG should have officially presented new products for this year’s Christmas business.
