Levels of violence in Mexico have remained for two decades: Máynez

Cuernavaca, Mor. Jorge Álvarez Máynez, candidate for the country’s presidency for the Citizen Movement (MC), spoke out in favor of changing the security strategy implemented in the country, because he maintained that to this day it remains “the same” “failed” strategy of former president Felipe Calderón Hinojosa (PAN) attributed this to the fact that in the last two decades, the levels of violence and homicides have not decreased in Mexico.

Máynez’s statements were made during a dialogue with young students from the Autonomous University of the state of Morelos (UAEM) held this afternoon at the sports center of the Chamilpa campus in this capital city.

This axis, of justice and security, stated that it will be part of his book New Mexico which will be presented next week. Because, he added, there are many, many problems in Mexico; But the problem of insecurity and violence is very serious and recent (from the Calderón administration (2006-2012) to now), to the point that Mexico is currently among the 10 countries in the world with the most violence and the most homicides.

“I will briefly tell you what the project we are proposing for Mexico is, which next week we will present in the book: The New Mexico With all the proposals that we are collecting, that we are building, it has three fundamental axes to change the country and to see the future.

“It has the first axis of Justice, of Security and in addition, the security strategy must be changed, Mexico has many problems, many”, mentioned some of them that have been going on for many years, such as poverty, inequality, with educational backwardness, that the health system did not work, among others; But public safety was not, at that time, a problem for Mexicans.

“And all these problems have already been in Mexico for many years, but not security; When I was a child you could play in the street all day (…) and the country that we had (two decades ago) changed because three six-year terms with Felipe Calderón (PAN) began a failed security strategy, a strategy of criminalization, of punitivism, prohibitionism and militarization, which has brought horror, which has brought tragedy to the country,” stressed the MC presidential candidate.

He recalled that his party was opposed in the times of Calderón (PAN) to the failed strategy that declared war against drug trafficking in the country, he also assured that they rejected that this same strategy will be replicated equally or worse in the six-year term of the PRI, Enrique Peña. Grandson (2012-2018).

“20 years ago, Mexico was not one of the 100 most violent countries, it was not one of the 100 countries with the most homicides in the world, and now we are one of the 10 most violent countries with the most homicides in the world.”

In this six-year term headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Máynez said that “essentially” it is the same security strategy and that is why it is urgent that it be changed to pacify the country.

“And today the strategy remains essentially the same: a strategy that fills the prisons with poor people; but it keeps the prisons full of criminals, a strategy that criminalizes poor young people, a strategy that has no sensitivity towards the victims, towards the disappeared, a strategy that turns its back on the women who suffer violence in our country, This strategy has been the same, they need to change it,” he stressed.

To change it, he assured that civil police officers who have professional training are needed, not just a six-week course, decent payments and benefits for those in uniform.

“We need to concentrate the security strategy on high-impact crimes; In my six-year term, I will not allow a woman to be imprisoned again for deciding about her body, nor a young man for smoking marijuana, because the police should not be useful for that; “The police must deter and prevent high-impact crimes that lacerate and hurt society.”

The country’s armed forces said that they can intervene, but temporarily, and in a special and extraordinary way and with respect for the members of the Armed Forces, because these, unlike the politicians in office and civil authorities, The military personnel “have faced the limit of their possibilities and have had casualties and have had problems, because for many governors and mayors it is very comfortable to say: let the army come (to confront the criminals),” he pointed out.

In this meeting with young people, he asked what the true commitments of current and future governors and mayors are to the peace and security of their state, and urged that there be controls for the participation of the Mexican armed forces, “so that “(these) have certainty, that they have certainty, we must protect them, we cannot allow our armed forces to be sued in international courts for the complicity, subordination and cowardice of the political class,” he stated.

The other two axes of his book will be a “Mexico with prosperity”, and in this area he recognized the environmental defender Samir Flores Soberanes, murdered in 2019 in his town Amilcingo, Temoac, one of the main opponents of the Morelos Comprehensive Project. (PIM) implemented since 2011, and until today they have not finished building it and getting it running one hundred percent. The third axis is a “Mexico of Equals”, focused on education for all girls, boys and young people in the country.

At this event there were more than 6 thousand university students who applauded, cheered, sought to take a photo with him, and some even sang fragments of the song “Presidente Máynez” to him.
