Letter from a Salvadoran-American citizen to the US ambassador. , Ronald Johnson | News from El Salvador

OPINION: In recent weeks, his apathy and indifference to the authoritarian attitudes of President Bukele, have made him an accomplice to the crisis that El Salvador will experience in the following months and years.

His Excellency Ambassador Ronald Johnson:

I wish you well. My name is Celina and I am proud to be Salvadoran and American. I am currently in the United States, unable to return to my country to be with my loved ones, courtesy of the arbitrary measures that the Salvadoran Government has adopted to combat this pandemic, de facto denying entry to its own nationals.

Despite wanting to be with my family in El Salvador, I find myself in a privileged situation because I am also American, and being able to be in the United States where my human rights are respected. A country that understands that the power of the Government is given and, at the same time limited, by what is established in the Constitution. In democracy, government officials must respect the Constitution without making interested interpretations of it at their convenience. As the United States Ambassador to El Salvador, it is your duty to promote democracy, with greater emphasis in times of crisis.

In recent weeks, his apathy and indifference to the authoritarian attitudes of President Bukele have made him an accomplice to the crisis that El Salvador will experience in the following months and years. As I understand it, President Bukele has allowed the United States to continue deporting migrants and thanks to this, he won the approval and recognition of President Trump on social networks. From your privileged position, I ask you to position yourself against the abuse of power of the current Salvadoran Government.

The well-being of the Salvadoran population is not a priority for this Government. The declaration of a state of emergency usurping functions of the Legislative Assembly It was not a necessity, because there is already another law that regulates it. Therefore, it was established that the only thing that President Bukele wants is to decide without transparency or to be questioned where the money goes and who executes the public works. That allows you to award contracts to family and friends without being held accountable. Under the pretext of the pandemic, it has criminalized the opposition and violated human rights.

Mr. Ambassador, have you been able to see the images of the prisons? Have you read the medical reports on the death of Eng. Henríquez and the unsanitary conditions in which the Government forced him to live in the detention centers? Do you consider this to be the correct way to lead this pandemic? His silence about it speaks volumes. For the sake of El Salvador, I hope that you will speak out against human rights violations and in favor of democracy.

Sincerely, Celina Wright

Salvadoran-American citizen
