Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Rachmat Kaimuddin confirmed that the legendary French producer, Citroen started assembling electric cars in Indonesia this year.
This assurance was conveyed by Rachmat at an event entitled ‘Update and Socialization of Incentives for KBLBB Investments to Stakeholders’ in DKI Jakarta.
“He said that in July 2024, he wants to go into production (assembling cars in Indonesia),” said Rachmat Kaimuddin, quoted from BetweenSaturday (2/3).

The assembly of the electric car will involve PT National Assembler as the assembly company from India, the Indomobil Group as the sole distributor of the Citroen brand in Indonesia, and Stellantis which is the global owner of the Citroen brand.
“He (Citroen) seems to be using existing facilities, but bringing CKD (completely knocked down). There are already assemblers here,” he stressed.
Previously, Tan Kim Piauw as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Citroen Indonesia gave a sneak peek regarding plans to assemble electric cars domestically. He said, the assembly will use Indomobil Group facilities located in Purwakarta, West Java.
“So we have two production facilities, in Pulogadung and Purwakarta. So, for Citroen, we will focus on Purwakarta. We will increase production capacity as the Citroen line continues,” he said.
Tan explained, to begin with, the Citroen factory in Purwakarta was only intended for domestic demand. His party does not rule out the possibility of exporting its units abroad. It’s just that, he said, not in the near future.

When asked about the production capacity of the Citroen factory in Purwakarta, Tan could not explain it directly. He only confirmed that this facility could produce thousands of vehicles every month.
“(Apart from Citroen), the Indomobil factory in Purwakarta is currently only producing Volkswagen cars. So it is very possible to increase its capacity,” he said.
For the record, Citroen is a legendary brand from France that has been around since 1919. They are known for their soft and comfortable hydraulic suspension. In fact, they liken it to riding on a flying carpet.
Citroen was big in Indonesia before leaving in 1994. At the end of 2022, they returned to the country under the umbrella of the Indomobil Group.
