Legal ban on meal deliverers under the age of 16 comes into effect on Wednesday

From 1 July, young people who are not yet 16 may no longer work as meal deliverers. Wednesday the ban that is laid down in the law on child labor will come into effect. The delays that had been incurred by the corona crisis have been caught up.

By law, 15-year-olds are only allowed to do ‘light work’. That is to say: activities that do not present any danger and that are not harmful to mental or physical health.

The House of Representatives and the Inspectorate of Social Affairs and Employment do not consider driving electric bicycles through traffic at high speed as light work, but dangerous work. The risk of robberies, because the young people drive around with cash, makes the work dangerous, say Chamber and Inspection.

Responsible State Secretary Van Ark of Social Affairs was initially hesitant about the ban. She did not want to deprive 15-year-olds the opportunity to earn a little extra. But the work is still too dangerous, she now believes.

Fine

Bringing meals on a commercial basis involving participation in traffic with the aid of a vehicle involves “safety risks that are unacceptable for the child”, Van Ark writes in her letter to the House of Representatives.

Companies that violate the prohibition can receive an administrative fine.
