Learn about intermittent fasting, a dietary method often followed by artists

Jakarta

Being overweight is indeed a scary condition for some people, especially women and performers. Therefore, they will do various ways to form a beautiful body and reach the ideal weight. One of them is undergoing the intermittent fasting diet method.

Intermittent fasting (EF) is a healthy eating pattern whose process is similar to fasting in Islam. Hence, this method uses a certain amount of time for someone to eat heavy meals in one day.

“This method (intermittent fasting) uses the term ‘food window’. This means that dieters will only be able to eat at certain times,” said Dr. Diana F Suganda, M.Kes, SpGK, Clinical Nutrition Specialist when interviewed directly by detikcom, Monday (10/03/2022).

How to do fast intermittent

As a prerequisite, people who follow this diet generally set eating activities every six hours. Outside this time limit, he cannot receive food intake, except for the consumption of mineral water or non-calorie products.

In this way, the calories that enter the body are reduced in order to have an impact on weight loss. Additionally, Dr Diana pointed out that this diet can be successful as long as the consumption of portions of food is guided by a balanced diet and a calorie deficit.

Sometimes, people keep getting confused about intermittent fasting because they think time limits are enough to affect weight loss. Then, when the time comes, devouring the dish becomes an act of ‘revenge’ to satisfy the appetite. This is the mentality that causes this diet not to give an optimal effect.

“Since the mentality is fasting, people think they can eat as much as possible, so there is no calorie deficit. So, you have to pay attention to what you eat and whether the food is balanced or not,” he explained.

Who Shouldn’t Follow the Intermittent Fasting Diet?

So, is intermittent fasting suitable for everyone? As this diet provides effective changes in a short time, it is widely used by the public. The following conditions are advised by doctors not to follow this diet:

1. People with gastric disorders

Dr. Diana revealed that not everyone with certain conditions can do intermittent fasting, such as people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acute gastritis.

This is because the disease requires the sufferer to consume food gradually over a short period of time, such as every two or three hours. If this diet is still reckless, it will actually cause more severe stomach problems and the consequences are dangerous for the health of the organism.

2. Diabetics

The same ban applies to people with diabetes. Dr. Diana reasoned that the long feeding cycle of this diet is not good for diabetes, where sugar levels tend to be unstable. In fact, it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia, which is sugar levels below normal limits.

“People with diabetes shouldn’t get EF. Why? Because people with diabetes have poor blood sugar regulation, so they can rise or fall rapidly. The condition can be hypoglycemic and dangerous,” he continued.

3. Pregnant women and nursing mothers

Even pregnant and lactating women are not recommended to follow this diet because they must eat regularly ensuring an adequate supply of nutrients and proteins.

“EF is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women, yes it is not allowed. Pregnant and lactating women should actually eat at regular meal times and with good portions and protein,” she said.

So, before starting the intermittent fasting diet, people should know their body condition and health so that they don’t cause new diseases. Furthermore, all types of diets cannot be generalized in function because they depend on the nutritional needs of each person. Consultation with a clinical nutritionist is the best way to determine which diet is suitable and presents minimal risk.
