The home and office of lawyer Yehudi Moszkowicz in Utrecht have been searched following his arrest in Belgium. A spokesperson for the dean in Central Netherlands confirmed this to NU.nl. The lawyer has not yet been suspended.
The Belgian newspaper The standard reported on Thursday that Moszkowicz was arrested at the end of September. He was arrested after a visit to alleged drug trafficker Flor Bressers, who is in custody in Beveren, Belgium.
After that visit, Moszkowicz was arrested for allegedly providing Bressers with services that went beyond a normal attorney-client relationship, writes The standard. It is not clear what kind of services this would involve.
The Belgian Public Prosecution Service would only confirm to NU.nl that Moszkowicz was recently arrested, subsequently interrogated by the police and ultimately released.
The Belgian newspaper writes that Moszkowicz has been conditionally released by an investigating judge. This means that the lawyer is free, but must adhere to certain rules. A spokesperson for the Belgian Public Prosecution Service confirmed this The standard. A condition would be that Moszkowicz no longer has contact with Bressers.
Moszkowicz not yet suspended pending further steps
It now appears that after the arrest, Moszkowicz’s office and home were searched on September 30. This happened at the request of Belgium. It is unclear whether anything was seized.
The National Public Prosecutor’s Office recently informed the dean in Central Netherlands of Moszkowicz’s arrest. A spokesperson said on behalf of the dean – a supervisor of the legal profession – that the dean has asked Belgium for additional information. “The dean needs this information for any follow-up steps,” the spokesperson said. There has also been contact with Moszkowicz himself. The content of that conversation is confidential.
Pending that information, Moszkowicz has not (yet) been suspended. The counselor is also still working in the Netherlands. For example, he took revenge at the Arnhem court on Thursday in the case against Aimane Taghi, a relative of Ridouan Taghi. That request for recusal was ultimately rejected. He must appear in court in Zwolle on Friday afternoon for another case.
Moszkowicz himself denies involvement. He says against The standard that he has “no legal problem.” NU.nl has tried to contact the lawyer, but he is currently unreachable.
Another lawyer in disrepute
Moszkowicz is the third Dutch lawyer to be discredited because he allegedly provided a client with more than just legal assistance.
Inez Weski was arrested in April this year on suspicion of membership of Ridouan Taghi’s criminal organization. She is now free again. Youssef Taghi, Ridouan Taghi’s cousin and then lawyer, was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison at the beginning of this year for similar facts.
Moszkowicz comes from a well-known lawyer family. His uncle Bram Moszkowicz assisted Willem Holleeder, among others.
