Lawsuit against police officers – Trump backs down

African American George Floyd was killed in the brutal action by the forces. The Minneapolis police have now charged one of the officials involved.

After the death of African-American George Floyd in the US city of Minneapolis, one of the police officers involved in the brutal operation was arrested and charged. US media unanimously reported on Friday that it was the policeman who had held his knee against Floyd’s neck for minutes.

CNN reporter Oscar Jimenez also tweeted that the police had also been charged with “third degree murder”. Floyd had pleaded for help several times before losing consciousness, as a video recorded. The 46-year-old then died in the hospital. As a result of his death, there had been serious riots in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the past few nights.

The four police officers involved in the operation were released. At first, however, they were neither arrested nor charged, which led to furious protests. Minnesota’s governor Tim Walz said at an emotional press conference on Friday that the judiciary would quickly investigate those involved. The governor shared horror at the incident. “The chapter that was written this week is one of our darkest chapters,” he said. Walz urged demonstrators to renounce violence.

Walz: Trump tweets “not helpful”

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has his Twitter-flagged tweet about the use of firearms against looters. On Friday, he stated – also on Twitter – that looting led to the shooting. “I don’t want this to happen”. And that’s what he meant with his tweet. A few hours earlier, in response to the riots in Minneapolis after Floyd’s death, he said he had pledged military support to the Governor of Minnesota. “Any trouble and we’ll take control, but when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” He would not allow “thugs” to dishonor Floyd’s memory.

Trump had also previously criticized Walz. The politician’s comments after Floyd’s death were “not helpful”. The city of Minneapolis is doing everything in its power to control the sometimes violent protests, Walz said at a press conference on Friday. “At the moment, in such an unpredictable situation, everything we do to add more oil to the fire is really, really a challenge,” said Walz. The situation could be brought under control without further heating the fire.

Walz apologized to CNN

Since Floyd’s death there have been violent protests there. The police are accused of racism, and many protesters are demanding justice for Floyd. The case has in the United States Horror. The police officers involved were released, but have so far not been arrested or charged.

Walz, however, apologized to CNN. A team from the US news channel was also arrested during the protests during a live broadcast. The police said a few hours later that three CNN officers had been released after it was confirmed that they were media representatives. “We have to make sure that the media can report on these important events.” The security of journalists is a top priority.
