Latest News from the Medical Field: Environmental Factors and Breast Cancer Risk, Lipidome Analysis, and AI in Screening Programs

In the September 26, 2023 edition of the show #știința360 on Radio Romania Cultural, Dr. Marius Geantă, President of the Center for Innovation in Medicine, commented on the latest news from the medical field published on Raportuldegardă.ro. You can listen the live showevery Tuesday, 2:00 p.m.

Here are the news of the week discussed in this podcast:

“The study, on the one hand, includes medical data as we know it, and on the other hand, it includes a lot of environmental data, including this type of PM2.5 particles (among the smallest particles). We knew about them that they were associated with an increased risk of lung cancer as a result of direct exposure.

Here, the increased incidence of breast cancer once linked to this type of particle represents an important argument for what environmental factors mean from the point of view of occurrence and the implicit possibility of breast cancer prevention. Of course, we still need other studies to show exactly which way these particles, perhaps in association with others, end up increasing the risk of breast cancer.

It also remains to be seen to what extent these kinds of environmental factors can be linked to other factors – genetic, biological, social and so on. It remains to be seen how these factors potentiate each other or vice versa. It is an extremely important message in terms of climate change concerns, for the transition to smart cities, obviously less polluted. This is probably the kind of public health intervention that is needed to reduce pollution.”

“The lipidome refers to the totality of lipids in the body. We mean both the diversity of lipids, but also how they interact with each other and with other molecules. Lipid profile testing should be part of the battery of tests that a person should have at least once a year, several times during their lifetime. It can give us some clues about a person’s possible risks.

I talked earlier about the risk of myocardial infarction, if cholesterol is high. On the other hand, obesity is associated with high cholesterol and obesity is known to be a risk factor for diabetes. So it is not necessarily a surprise that this link between lipids and diabetes, dyslipidemia is common in patients who have diabetes. What is new in this study is this level of detail, analysis of the lipidome, analysis that is extremely in-depth.

It is not wrong to draw a parallel with next-generation sequencing. This kind of analysis allowed the identification of relevant biomarkers for what diabetes risk means – insulin resistance is associated with diabetes. This study shows that half of the lipids analyzed are associated with insulin resistance. Another extremely interesting finding that could lead to further developments is that if a respiratory viral infection occurs, the expression of 200 lipids changes, and this correlates with changes in metabolism and the onset of inflammation. These are factors that we also know are associated with diabetes.”

“It is a publication that appeared the other day and which we will discuss in detail in the coming period on Raportuldegarda and here on the show – this publication shows us that, in fact, the screening programs as we know them have for many years reached maximum potential. Then the idea is not to abandon screening programs but to increase their performance. The immediate solution is precisely the adoption of new technologies that help from this point of view to better identify cases or to better exclude cases. Here, if we talk about artificial intelligence algorithms, there are obviously many variants worldwide. I’ve written and spoken about many of them over the past few years.

These kinds of publications are appearing, what is very important is that the scientific evidence is solid, and extremely important is how such a solution is implemented in screening systems. Here it is very important that the medical staff accept and understand the benefits and limitations of the solution. We need to get out once and for all of the idea that an AI solution can take the place of a doctor, that will never happen. But it can obviously help him in increasing the performance, the speed of delivering the results.”

Other news discussed on the show:
