Latest Case of Swine Flu in England Sparks Investigation and Health Concerns

Tuesday, 28 November 2023 – 10:34 WIB

ENGLAND – The latest case of swine flu was discovered in England. Currently, local health officials and experts are investigating the emergence of an A(H1N2)v virus infection detected in a routine flu screening test at a GP surgery in North Yorkshire.

Officials said the person experienced respiratory symptoms, mild illness and has fully recovered. The patient is known to have never handled pigs directly so an investigation will be carried out to find out where the infection came from and the risk to human health. Scroll further.

Swine flu virus infections in humans do occur, there have been at least 50 cases of A(H1N2)v reported globally in the last 20 years. There were also cases reported in the United States last August.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said it planned to increase surveillance through GP surgeries and hospitals in parts of North Yorkshire where the cases were detected.

“We are working quickly to trace close contacts and reduce the potential for spread. In accordance with established protocols, an investigation is underway to learn how the individual contracted the infection and to assess whether there are any further related cases. The new Health Minister, Victoria Atkins, said the individual “These were identified through a comprehensive and extensive screening and monitoring program carried out by UKHSA,” said Meera Chand, as director of UKHSA, as reported by BBCTuesday 28 November 2023.

“It’s good that this case is known, please trust UKHSA to do its job and monitor it closely,” he said.

People with flu-like symptoms are advised to avoid contact with other people, especially those who are elderly or vulnerable, with other health conditions.

Chief Veterinary Officer, Christine Middlemiss, added that animal diseases can often be transmitted to humans. That is why cleanliness and animal health are very important to prioritize for the health of the people around them too.

“We know that some animal diseases can be transmitted to humans – which is why high standards of animal health, welfare and biosecurity are so important,” said Christine.

Christine also advised that pig owners should report signs of swine flu in their livestock to their local veterinarian. Paul Hunter, professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, believes that A(H1N2) does not cause more severe disease than other commonly circulating strains of influenza. Meanwhile, Ian Jones, professor of virology at the University of Reading, said it was highly unlikely that this single case represented anything more than had been seen in the past. Ian Jones also saw that this mild infection was also consistent with previous illnesses.
