Last step in the vaccination process for nursing homes, almost all residents vaccinated | NOW

The last vaccination operation in nursing homes and institutions for people with intellectual disabilities will start next week. The RIVM tells this in conversation with NU.nl. During the ‘sweeping round’, all waiting are vaccinated against COVID-19. About six to seven hundred healthcare institutions still have to take (a few) injections.

These are people who so far could not be injected due to medical complaints, new residents and people who still need to receive a second dose. “Then we are as good as done with those groups,” said the spokesman.

The vaccine doses will be delivered next week. On Wednesday, a start will be made with the last part of the injection process in nursing homes, among others.

Before that, a few logistical hurdles have to be overcome. The residents are given the vaccine from Pfizer. The institutions themselves have to communicate how many vaccine doses are needed, but they will not receive that exact number of doses. They receive vials from which six to seven doses can be taken.

Because in some cases less than six or seven injections have to be taken, the RIVM does not want to provide all institutions with at least one bottle. “Then a lot of vaccine doses are wasted. We are looking at how we can solve this.”

Nursing home residents were first given corona vaccines on Monday, January 18. About 185,000 residents had to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
