It was under a downpour that the four members of the laser run team and the two officials from the Pleyben trades high school set off for Talence on Thursday. The reason ? Their participation in the French UNSS laser run championship, a sport consisting of running and laser pistol shooting. “We had this weather until Bordeaux, where we stopped for the night. Just like the next day, Friday, in Talence, our destination, after a stop in front of the Dune du Pilat. We even thought that the event was threatened, ”says Elsa Pagès, physical education and sports teacher who accompanied them, as did Richard Thomas.
“There was a very high level”
Fortunately, the weather had finally lifted on Saturday. The opening series proved to be complicated for Asselia, Camerone, Ewen and Gurvan who finished in last place: “There was a very high level in front, especially in the 600m races. “It was difficult to remobilize them, they had taken a little blow in the back of the head. During their series B in the afternoon, they ran better and made a good shot”: unfortunately, they once again finished in fourth place.
A suprise
The head was low at the time of the medal ceremony, but a surprise awaited them: being part of the only professional high school to have made the trip, the Breton team won the gold medal in this category! “We knew it from the day before, but we preferred not to tell them anything,” says the professor.
“During the return journey by minibus (and an arrival in Pleyben around 11 p.m. on Saturday), feelings oscillated between the disappointment of having “missed” their races and the satisfaction of taking part in a competition of national scope and of bring back a medal: there was also a lot of fatigue. We are very proud of them, like the officials Clément and Thomas, also rewarded: they gave the maximum with, in front of them, a rather impressive level”.
