Largest companies in Quebec

The Canmec Group is still among the top 300

Once again, the Canmec Group finds itself in the 2022 ranking of the 300 largest companies in Quebec by the newspaper Les Affaires. The Saguenay company ranks 249th with 409 employees.

Year in and year out, Canmec brings together between 450 and 500 employees, who are found on various construction sites, in factories and in its offices.

“It’s always interesting to see this record and to be able to compare yourself. It’s a little velvety too and it’s additional visibility for our company,” says Julie Roy, Vice-President, Corporate Services at Canmec.

The company specializes in the supply and installation of mechanically welded equipment and components in the energy, aluminum, mining, pulp and paper, and industrial construction sectors.

It exports a little outside the country, but its main markets are in Canada: British Columbia, Newfoundland/Labrador, Manitoba, Maritimes, but especially in Quebec and Ontario. Canmec is very present these days in the aluminum smelting and hydroelectricity sectors.

During the pandemic, supply was among the main issues. The situation has improved a lot since then.

“Fortunately, the pandemic has not impacted our activities too much. »

Major projects in progress

Among the current major projects, Canmec has several workers at the Isle-Maligne d’Alma hydroelectric dam for repair work. The company has had teams on site for almost two years and this should continue for another four years. For Canmec, this is a contract of around $70 million.

However, it was in Ontario, in Little Long, that Canmec landed the largest contract in its history, valued at $90 million. Workers from the Saguenay company have been repairing the dam since 2020. The project should be completed next year.

The Gouin Bridge in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is another of the great recent successes of which Julie Roy is particularly proud.

Teams are currently at work repairing the CN rail section on the Quebec Bridge and the Pierre-Laporte Bridge.

35 years of experience

The year 2023 will also mark the 35th anniversary of the founding of the company, which intends to mark the event with various activities paying tribute to its teams of employees.

The Canmec Group has also just won two major awards at the recent Dubuc Gala of the Saguenay-Le Fjord Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCISF): Company of the Year and Best Manufacturing Company.

“It is a great reward and a source of great pride for our company to receive these awards. At Canmec, we improve every day and we grow together. We have also taken the technological turn in recent years, with robotics in particular, which supports our teams of welders. With the labor shortage, it’s a definite advantage to have such equipment,” continues Julie Roy.

Here again, adds the vice-president, the Canmec Group is doing well, even if there are trades where it is more difficult to recruit.

“We held a very first mission abroad, two or three years ago, and it’s going very well. There is no language barrier, so it is much easier to integrate them. Currently, we have five Moroccan workers with us and we expect 21 more by next November. They are mostly machinists and welders. »

The company, which has experienced continuous growth for several years, already has many projects, after only the first five months of the year. And according to Julie Roy, the order book is excellent for 2022-2023.

The Cahier EntrePrendre is an initiative of Trium Media, in collaboration with the newspaper Les Affaires. In the quarterly editions (April, June, September and November) there will be articles directly related to the issues and challenges of the business world.
