Florida State Senator Jason Pizzo said he saw the body in a yellow body bag taken away by rescue teams in the area of the building collapse in Surfside. and another that was marked.
In statements to the newspaper Miami Herald, the senator said that the bodies were transferred to a tent of the homicide unit which was installed along the beach.
“This is a painful time for our community as families suffer the pain of the partial collapse of the condo tower in Surfside. Our team is coordinating with state and local resources to effectively deploy all available and necessary assistance as our brave first responders work to save lives during this critical search and rescue phase.”, Pizzo had previously said.
“This is one unimaginable tragedy that will require our attention in the hours, days and weeks to come, and we will provide the necessary support and comfort to our neighbors and residents as they go through this enormously difficult time”He added.
The partial collapse of the 12-story building resulted in at least one dead and 99 missing, according to official information available so far, and caused a huge deployment of first responders in the area of the incident.
What’s more, 102 people have been rescued, of which 37 were saved from the building structure and medically assisted.
The event occurred around 2 AM (local time) on Thursday, between the streets 88 Y Collins Avenue on Surfside, near Miami Beach, in a building that makes up part of the complex Champlain Towers. There the firefighters have been carrying out an imposing search and rescue operation for more than 24 hours.
The authorities confirmed the death of a woman, but still they did not detail how many people lived in the building or the possible causes of the collapse.
The police closed the nearby streets, and dozens of rescue vehicles and firefighters, ambulances and police flooded the place. The landslide kicked up a cloud of dust that spread through the neighborhood and covered cars on the street, even two blocks away.
