La Florida is a commune located in the southeastern sector of the city of Santiago, capital of Chile. It is part of the Province of Santiago. It limits to the south with Puente Alto, to the north with Macul and Peñalolen, to the east with the commune of San José de Maipo and to the west with La Granja. It currently has almost 400,000 inhabitants, which makes it the third most populated in Chile after Puente Alto and Maipú.
La Florida is a residential commune and is composed mainly of families of medium-high and high socioeconomic level (C1 and C2), ranking 12th among the 346 communes that make up Chile in terms of the Human Development Index.
In the 1990s, La Florida was characterized as the most populated commune in Chile. This occurred due to a growing expansion of the capital that meant the construction of new residential neighborhoods in places not so close to the center of Santiago and with it the population increase in communes such as La Florida. However, the growing real estate development of Puente Alto and Maipú during the 2000s had as a consequence the fall of La Florida to third place in the ranking of the most inhabited communes of Greater Santiago.
The arrival of the Metro through the construction of Line 5, in 1997, consolidated the commercial growth that the commune had been having since the 1980s, turning this commune into a “sub-center”, since people do not have to go to the center of Santiago to do paperwork, but rather closer to home. In 2005 the Vicente Valdés station was inaugurated, which is part of Line 4.
